10 Years In Review: Hip Hop - A World View
In 2003, sf|noir held a sold-out symposium on hip hop culture and its influence and proliferation around the world called Hip Hop: A World View. A study on how hip hop, this truly African American art form was being shared with cultures around the world.
We brought together three community partners to help us explore the impact of hip hop in their respective countries. Representatives from Alliance Francaise, Istituto Italiano di Cultura and the Goethe Institute helped form a panel of academics, musicians and DJs to lead the audience through a better understanding of hip hop’s history and impact in their respective countries.
National Geographic recognizes hip hop as “the world’s favorite youth culture” in which “just about every country on the planet seems to have developed its own local rap scene.” The music now transcends its original roots and has gained in its global popularity because of its ability to give a voice to disenfranchised youth in any country. Here’s a sampling of hip hop videos from a handful of countries with long-standing hip hop scenes.
