Join SF Noir for Stew & the Negro Problem at JCCSF. These concert performances hover between rock and theater, mixing genre-defying music, sophisticated wordplay and a streetwise vulnerability. Bandleader Stew, his collaborator Heidi Rodewald and their ensemble combine elements of cabaret, soul and subversive pop to create a unique style they’ve dubbed “Afro-Baroque.” Frequently likened to Cole Porter, Burt Bacharach and Elvis Costello, they spin songs with hook-filled melodies and taut poetic narratives. Their Tony Award®-winning musical Passing Strange debuted at Berkeley Rep, sold out Broadway houses and was later adapted for film by Spike Lee.
“It’s a given that an African-American who fronts a group called the Negro Problem has a well-developed sense of mischief. But it’s Stew’s lush sense of melody and witty, journalistically detailed lyrics that make his second album…a true treat for those who care about innovative, thought-provoking lyrics.”
